The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the nation's third largest public transportation authority, operates transit services, as an interstate compact between the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In October 2019, WMATA selected CBRE as their Strategic Partner and Consultant to launch and lead the retail leasing initiative at all 91 Stations. This strategic partnership between the WMATA and CBRE is providing unique unparalleled retail opportunities across the DC Metro Area.
The WMATA Metrorail network has grown to cover 6 lines, 91 stations, and over 117 miles of track.
THE OFFERING
The goal of WMATA’s Station Commercialization is to dynamically change and exceed customer expectations by offering more amenities and services to riders which will fundamentally alter and re-position the concept of Metrorail in the marketplace. Thus, the Retail Initiative was launched with WMATA’s priority in mind – Riders and the Metro experience.
RETAIL STRATEGY – WMATA must meet passengers’ expectations for convenient, intuitive station and system navigation. The retail component of this station commercialization strategy adds an experiential element: “surprising” customers with goods and services, without getting in the way.
